MHD simulations of spinning supermassive black hole binaries

Every galaxy with a bulge contains a supermassive black hole in its center. When two galaxies merge, a supermassive binary black hole system could be formed. In that case, the black holes may reach close enough distances to effectively radiate gravitational waves and start inspiralling. In this scenario, the electromagnetic emission due to the accretion of the surrounding gas is a promising observable for current and near-future telescopes. To understand such complex systems we need relativistic MHD simulations over a dynamical space-time representing the binary system. I will discuss our recent efforts to build such analytical space-time and its implementation in the MHD code HARM3D.
