Roughly 10 percent of all isolated white dwarfs have magnetic fields in excess of 10-1000 MG, this is in contrast the kG fields of all other isolated white dwarfs. These objects have been coined High Field Magnetic White Dwarfs (HFMWDs) and the origin of their strong fields has been debated in literature since their discovery in the 1980s. Our current understanding points to a binary origin to the magnetic field, more specifically, it is believed that the magnetic field is the result of a common envelope interaction. I use hydrodynamic simulations to test the validity of current common envelope theories for these objects and others.
